Dana Pleasant Photography Studio Project: from start to finish – Pound Arts – Seattle, WA

Usually I don’t write much to go along with the photos I share, so forgive me if this is long-winded. I am very excited about this post because it marks the end of a very long project.  I will start from the beginning.

My friend Debbie Faas, who is an amazing painter (check her out at www.debbiefaas.com), has had a space at Pound Arts for quite some time.  Pound Arts is an artists’ building on Capitol Hill. Last year I mentioned to her that if anything opened up in the building to let me know right away. I got a message from her in August saying someone was moving out. I immediately went in to see it. As you can see from the photos below, it needed a LOT of love – way more than I had originally anticipated. I had to jump on the opportunity! The location is amazing. It is walking distance from where I live and there are tons of windows, which makes the natural light in this space really fantastic.  I took a leap of faith and decided to go for it.

Originally I thought it just needed some coats of paint, but I soon realized it needed a lot more. A friend, Willie Dwyer, offered to help me. He has been my saint the past few months. He replaced some of the floor boards that were rotting. He put in a new wall for me so that I would have one good, clean shooting wall. He put in lights and outlets.  I will owe him for this forever!!

Aside from Willie, so many of my amazing friends and family stepped up to help me. It has been a four month project involving a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, but also a lot of love! I am incredibly thankful for everyone who helped me as I never could have done it alone. The photos below are a mix of iphone photos and photos from my regular shooting camera. I don’t usually include iphone photos on my blog, but I wanted to show the whole process.

Now that it is finished I am so happy to have a client meeting space and studio to call my own! I am excited to shoot there and have the opportunity to work on more personal projects.  So, stay tuned for lots of new studio work!  Also, I will be renting it out to other photographers, so please contact me if you are interested.

Tomorrow night (December 12th), Pound Studios is having its Annual Holiday Open House. It will be the first time my studio is open to the public! If you would like to come and see it for yourself, feel free to stop by anytime between 5-10pm. The address is: 1216 10th Ave. It is just south of Union on 10th.

This is what it looked like when I signed the lease:

As you can see below, the floor and the walls were a mess. All the walls had to be sanded and holes puttied before any painting could be done!

This was the wall before Willie put up new drywall for me.

The ceiling had been covered in black plastic for years because of a fire in the building many years ago. They put up plastic to keep out the soot. I decided I wanted to brave the soot and have the original wood beams showing. This was the messiest thing I have ever done in my life. I was covered in black soot for 2 days.

Next my friend Tracy helped me paint the ceiling.

Willie replaced part of the floor.

New drywall!

Painting the floor came last!

Aaaand…Here it is, my new studio!!!
